The award for the Canadian senior women’s curling championship should be called the Anderson Trophy.
Sherry Anderson and her rink of lead Anita Silvernagle, second Brenda Goertzen and third Patty Hersikorn from the Nutana Curling Club won the event for ages 50 and over for five consecutive years.
The final in 2018 was tight. Anderson trailed by four early in the game. She got steals in three consecutive ends. With the hammer in the extra end, Anderson won the Canadian championship by scoring one with the last shot.
The 2021 final was decisive. Anderson made an outturn draw for three in the seventh. The title was a lock when B.C.’s only hope was a quadruple takeout in the eighth.
Anderson’s rink went 44-13 at nationals in their drive for five.
Qualifying for the Canadian championship meant winning provincials. In the Saskatchewan final in 2019, Anderson scored three in the last end. In 2022, a deuce in the last end clinched the title.
Provincials led to nationals; nationals led to worlds.
The world championship for the Anderson rink was cancelled one year due to COVID. At worlds in Switzerland they were defeated in a quarter-final. They won the world championship in Sweden, in Norway and in South Korea.
Anita Silvernagle is from Biggar. Brenda Goertzen and Patty Hersikorn are from Saskatoon. Sherry Anderson is from Delisle. As curlers, the house is their home.
This team was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.
