In YBC 5 pin bowling, dynasties are nearly impossible—national champions age out, and replacements rarely match their skill. Yet Hunter’s Fairhaven Bowl’s senior girls (14-18 yrs) had the depth and competitive fire to defy the odds, winning Canadian titles in 1998, 1999, and 2000. This team three peat was the first in YBC Nationals making them the only team dynasty in the event’s 60 year history.
Ken Gryschuk coached the team. Robin Bolton played all three years. Coral Bolton, Julie Kolendreski, Candace Orenchuk, Crystal Orenchuk and Michelle Simpson were on two of the teams. Lindsay Berge and Megan Berge won seniors once.
Robin and Coral Bolton are sisters. So are Candace and Crystal Orenchuk. So are Lindsay and Megan Berge. When the playoffs got going, opponents said oh brother.
Five-player teams play four-game blocks In YBC’s city and provincial rolloffs. Highest total wins. Fairhaven cruised.
At nationals, teams play a triple round-robin. The team with the most wins takes the title. Fairhaven dominated, setting records with 20 total wins in 1998 and 19 straight wins in 1999.
Coral Bolton received the Most Outstanding Performance award in 1998. Crystal Orenchuk won the award in 1999 and 2000.
Coral Bolton, Crystal Orenchuk, Lindsay Berge and Julie Kolendreski completed a career triple crown by winning nationals in three age groups.
In YBC, Fairhaven Bowl is the gold standard.
