2009 Lee Morrison rinkEvery season has a reason. For Lee Morrison’s rink, 2009 was extra pleasing.

This was the sixth time Morrison competed in the Canadian masters championship for curlers age 60 and older. She won her first Saskatchewan masters title in 2000. She repeated in 2001. Peggy Hergott was on Morrison’s rink that won master provincials in 2003 and 2004. Hergott and Bernice Van Der Velden were on Morrison’s rink from Saskatchewan that tied for second in the preliminary round at the Canadian masters championship in 2008. They were defeated in a tiebreaker.

Marg Griffiths joined the Morrison rink for 2009. This was the first year they curled together, with Griffiths at lead, Hergott second, Van Der Velden third and Morrison skip.

The Morrison rink was 4-0 in pool play at the 2009 provincial championship in Prince Albert. They defeated Crystal Frisk of Battleford in the Page playoff and met Frisk again in the final, winning 7-5.

The Dundee Canadian masters championships were in Saskatoon at the Nutana, Morrison’s club.

The week was hits and misses.

In the first end of a round-robin game against B.C., Carol McFadden was lying three. Morrison made a takeout with her last stone.

In the seventh end against Northern Ontario, Maymar Gemmel stole three in the seventh end to tie the game. Morrison stole three in the eighth for the win.

Quebec’s Elizabeth Judge stole two in the third and one in the fourth in defeating Morrison.

Morrison stole three in the fifth in defeating Manitoba’s Elaine Jones.

Morrison finished third in the preliminary round.

Morrison defeated Betty Bush of Ontario 7-4 in the semi final.

In the final against Sandra Turner of Alberta, the game was tied 2-2 in the last end. Morrison had the hammer. With 10 rocks in the house, Turner tried to deflect one of her stones onto the button with Alberta’s last shot. She came up short. The first shot of the last end, a counter by Morrison’s lead Griffiths, was the winner.

The team was inducted into the Saskatchewan Curling Association legends of curling honour roll in recognition and achievement in the sport of curling in 2009. As well, the team was nominated for the 2009 Sask Sport Master Athlete of the Year and were runners up.
