Softball
In 2008, with the nucleus of the Outlaw team still together, and joined by a number of players who moved into Saskatoon for university, or specifically to play for the Outlaws, the team triumphed in the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association Division 1 by winning all 20 of their league games. They went on to capture Softball Saskatchewan’s Junior Women’s Provincial Championship by winning all 7 of the games played. They then shocked everyone but themselves when they went to Summerside, Prince Edward Island and won Softball Canada’s Junior Women’s Canadian Championship with a 9 and 1 record. Selected for the National Tournament All Star Team was Anne Kelly on 2nd base and Lyndsay Koscielski on short stop. Sydney Marquardt was selected as the Top Player in the championship round.
The Outlaws were out for redemption in their 2010 season. They began by winning the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association Division 1 title by winning all 20 of their league games, and were undefeated in the 6 games played to capture the Softball Saskatchewan’s Junior Women’s Provincial Championship title. The team had something to prove at Softball Canada’s Junior Women’s Canadian Championship. Facing the pressure of the home crowd in Saskatoon, as well high expectations because of the championship win 2 years earlier, they dominated the field completing the round robin portion of the tournament with a 5 and 0 record. With each win, the support of the home town crowd grew stronger and stronger as more and more people came out to support the local Outlaws team. Placed on the All Star Team for the qualifying round was Anne Kelly for 2nd base. Anne also received the Top Batter Award, Kelsey Garner received the Top Pitcher Award, and Lyndsay Koscielski was named Most Valuable Player. The team did not let up in the championship playoff round. They played to a 4 and 1 record which allowed them to capture the 2010 Canadian title. They were led by pitcher, Kelsey Garner, who was awarded Top Player in the championship round.
The next year began similar to the 2008 and 2010 seasons. The Outlaws captured the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association’s Division 1 title as well as Softball Saskatchewan’s Junior Women’s Provincial title with a 20 and 0 record, and 4 and 0 record respectively. They then traveled to Windsor, Ontario for the Softball Canada’s Canadian Junior Women’s Canadian Championship and won it again with a 5 and 0 round robin record, and a 4 and 1 playoff record. Team mates Sidney Marquardt and Karmen Coffey made the All Star Team. Outstanding performances by Top Batter of the tournament, Sidney Marquardt, and Top Pitcher of the tournament, Katherine Guenther, moved the team into an elite group joining only two other teams in history to win the Canadian Championship three times.
The Outlaws have had tremendous success winning 8 consecutive Provincial titles, 3 National titles, and 1 Western Canadian title, as well as numerous league and tournament championships. However, their success is about more than just medals. What began as an intense rivalry in their childhood years has grown into profound respect and friendship. This is obvious as the team members continue to support each other at weddings, funerals, birth of children and life’s challenges. The sport of softball has created life-long bonds for these women and success on and off the field that they can be proud of.
