2003 and 2004 Huskie Womens Track and Field
Team (2018)
Track and Field
Each team original; both years distinct.
Led by head coach Lyle Sanderson, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies earned back-to-back national championships in women's track and field. Although 14 student-athletes were on both title-winning teams, 16 student-athletes changed.
In 2003, the Huskies produced top-six finishes in all but two events. The Huskies had podium finishes in the sprints, distance, jumps and throws.
In 2004, the team set a new Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships record for the most points scored by a team in the championships by posting top-six finishes in every event they entered. They had podium finishes in the sprints, jumps, throws and pentathlon.
The Huskies' only back-to-back winner in an individual event was Kelsie Hendry. She broke the CIS record both years in pole vault.
Although the lineup on their 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams changed year-to-year, all of the relay teams placed in the top two, with the 4x4 team winning both years.
Lyle Sanderson retired after the 2004 season. He capped off his distinguished career with the team points record and his 4th National Championship in 5yrs. The University and Track & Field community saw the passing of Lyle in 2018. This induction is very special as these were his final two women's teams as head coach.
