Soccer

Mark MillardBy the end of 2002, the Lakewood Storm had had a good run. They were city champions. They were second in the Aurora tournament. For Mark Millard it was just the beginning.

That was his first year of coaching. Twenty-three years later, long after his children have graduated from youth soccer, Mark is still showing kids how to play the game.

He has coached indoors and outdoors, from community association to under-17/19 boys. He is a constant on the bench, but that’s only half the story.

Mark Millard was a key player in starting the drop-in walking soccer program. He’s been on the board with Saskatoon Youth Soccer for 10 years, both as its president and as a director. He is chair on a committee that raises money for the Saskatoon Youth Soccer Athlete Fund, helping athletes pay their fees. He was on the board of directors with the Saskatoon Soccer Centres for nine years. He took a key role in developing the Alliance league and Academy to give youth high quality training.

Mark is from the United Kingdom, the birthplace of soccer. He makes a point of celebrating soccer’s history in Saskatoon. He knows the first game here happened in 1904. He can tell you about the touring Islington Corinthians from London who played the Northern Saskatchewan All-Stars in 1938 and Tottenham Hotspur who played in Saskatoon in 1952. He has heard the noisemakers that fans used in the ’50s. Mark helps find this stuff as a volunteer with the Soccer Legacy Project, its harvest of plenty is on display in showcases at the Kinsmen/Henk Ruys and the Saskatoon Soccer Centre.

Mark Millard also trained in Tae kwon do until 2005. He is a National and Provincial champion. He won bronze at Pan Ams. He coached Tae kwon do, too, of course.
