Track and Field

Don HedmanHis name isn’t in the program. He never makes the victory podium.

He doesn’t appear in action photos. But Don Hedman is everywhere in track and field. He is in the stands as a coach. He is near the pit as a jump official. He is at the table for a club meeting.

His contribution to the sport is long and deep.

Don has coached and served on the board with Riversdale Athletics for 15 years, from treasurer to vice-president to president. Don has coached track and field at Holy Cross High School for 12 years. He has been an official for 24 years.

Think of the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games in January. Consider the provincial high school championships in June. As an official, Hedman has been there. He has done that.

He has been the head coach of under-16s and under-18s with Team Sask. He has volunteered on the board with Hub City track and the Bob Adams Foundation.

Don keeps raising the bar. He does the training and gets the education that an official needs to raise their certification. His regional assignments include the Western Canada Summer Games and Canada West university meets. Being a Level 4 official has qualified him to do U SPORTS competition, Olympic Trials and the Canada Summer Games where completed his second Level 5 evaluation. He has worked at the World Deaf Games.

Although track and field is his signature sport, Hedman shares the wealth. He has sponsored women’s softball and men’s rec hockey. He has coached girls’ softball and volleyball. He has served on the board with the Marian Gymnastics Club and Saskatoon Diving Club.

Seasons change. Don Hedman goes and grows.
