Bob Reindl was a championship track athlete in various age groups, capping off his competitive career with five appearances for Canada in international competitions.
Bob was born in Saskatoon. One of his early interests was hockey. It was while attending a Junior Cadet camp in Vernon, B.C., where he ran in the 800 meters, that his spark for track and field was lit.
Bob competed in high school meets for four years, setting a new provincial junior record in the 800m in 1975, setting a new provincial senior record in the 800m and also winning the 400m in 1976. He was a member of the Riversdale Track and Field Club where Brian Clark was his coach.
Bob was chosen to represent Saskatchewan at the 1975 Western Canada Summer Games in Regina then in 1979 and 1983. His best finish was 2nd in 1979 in the 800m in Saskatoon. He attended the 1977 Canada Summer Games in Newfoundland where he won the 800m tying the meet record and finished 3rd in the 1500m.
Bob had a particular flair for the Knights of Columbus Saskatchewan Indoor Games, notably in 1977 when he upset the Americans in the invitational 1,000m race setting a new Saskatchewan Indoor Record in the process and again in 1978 when he won the invitational 800 meters. He was voted Saskatchewan Athlete of the Meet for both years.
Bob won the 800m at the Canadian Senior Championships in 1977 and a Bronze in 1978 and went on to represent Canada at the Pacific Conference Games in Australia in 1977. He won the 800m in California in a Tri-Country match against the USA and Japan in 1977 toured Europe in 1979 competing in England, Germany and Italy.
He was voted the Saskatoon Kinsmen Male Athlete of the Year for 1977.
